Many of you may have heard of dental implants particularly in modern dentistry. Did you know the first dental implant to be placed in a human jaw was in 1965?
Dental implants are a method to replace missing teeth, they are used in conjunction with a porcelain implant crown allowing the result to have a natural, aesthetic finish.
A dental implant is a small titanium post screwed into the jawbone under the gum. Currently implants are the closest thing to a like for like tooth replacement. Once the jaw bone has healed around the implant (approximately 2 months later), a crown is tailor made and cemented onto the implant component. The crown is matched to your natural tooth shade with the aim to look as natural as possible.
It has been said that you will notice a difference in sensation as the implants are not supplied by your nerves. As time goes on, this becomes much less noticeable. Oral hygiene must be to a good standard in order for dental implants to be successful e.g. brushing teeth twice daily and regular flossing.
Advantages of dental implants is that they are the best tolerated in comparison to a denture. They feel more natural than other tooth replacements although they are the closest form to natural dentition that science can offer.
