The risks and rewards of teeth whitening

Demand for teeth whitening has soared in recent years as people long for perfect smiles like their favourite celebrities.

With more and more of us choosing to perk up our pearlers, however, there has also been a rise in the number of unsafe and illegal teeth whitening options on the market.

One in four people would reportedly rather use a home whitening kit purchased on the internet – or visit illegal beauticians or kiosks for whitening treatment – than have treatment done by their dentist.

The study, by health charity the Oral Health Foundation, summarised that some 20 million people in the UK are risking the dangers of unsafe or illegal treatment.

Severe chemical, permanent scarring and tooth loss are just some of the potential results of such treatments, while in certain cases, individuals have had their ability to eat and breathe compromised.

European legislation means that tooth whitening products releasing or containing more than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide can only be sold by registered dental professionals.

Tooth whitening patients must also be over 18 and examined by dentists to assess any risks before they undergo treatment. The first round of treatment must also be carried out by a dental practitioner or by a dental therapist or hygienist under their supervision. Any treatments carried out which don’t meet these regulations are illegal.
